Welcome to My Blog

steelcase_walkstation_treadmill.jpgHaving never blogged before, I’m not sure how to get started. Perhaps I should begin by thanking you for taking the time to visit my website and encouraging you to look at all we have to offer. If you don’t see what you need, please let me know.

It has occurred to me that, while I try to stay on top of the latest ergonomic trends, it would be helpful to have input from my clients as to what their actual needs are so that I can best determine how to fulfill them.

With that in mind, I’m hoping that some of you will take the time to respond with some suggestions as to things you might like to see on our website.

Personally, I recently came across a new product that I found interesting. The concept seems good but I’m wondering if anyone would actually be willing to use it on a regular basis. If you’re like me and spend way too much time sitting at your desk, it might be the solution to your time management problems. Too much work and not enough working out seems to be a growing problem, so to speak. This product could get you up and moving, while still allowing you to get some work done. It’s probably not for everyone but, for those who spend a lot of time reviewing files, responding to e-mails, talking on the phone, etc., this could really work.

Apparently, it has a maximum speed of two miles per hour and is aimed at keeping your heart rate steady. It is quiet and has an adjustable work surface with an arc-shaped indentation in the table. The treadmill’s surface is slightly narrower than most machines’, but the arc and the firm wrist pad help prevent the need for side railings. It isn’t suggested that it be used as the primary work station but possibly an interesting “hot station” to be shared by everyone or in conference rooms where people could walk as they review PowerPoint slides or teleconference. While we would all rather take a walk in the park, this could be a great alternative for those trapped in the office all day trying to get some work done.

What do you think? I look forward to hearing from you.

I love the idea but I can’t imagine working at the station for longer than an hour at a time. Still, it would be a great thing to have in the office on the days when I just can’t make it to the gym or it’s too ugly outside to go for a walk.

I think it would be difficult to work more than an hour at a time too. It would be a good turn-taker with a fellow worker. Thanks for stopping in and look for more from us real soon.

Wow. What a great product. I have never seen this before. I sit in an office all day mostly typing, and do not have time during the day and am too tired at night to exercise. I have tried to do some exercise on my breaks, but being the CEO of a fairly large company, I really don’t get the chance. After reading your blog and seeing your site, I am seriously considering purchasing some of them. Thank you for bringing this new product to my attention. It will be brought up at our next staff meeting.

We are really happy that you came to our blog and website and love the product. Let us know if you have any further questions after your staff meeting.

I think this products is a super idea. I just hope that the manufacturer makes it affordable so that businesses can purchase them.
Do you know the retail price?

    Hi Linda,
Thanks for your response! The retail price should run between $3,500.00 and $4,000.00.

I actually had this product at an office I used to work it. Its a great way to burn calories, relieve stress and break up the monotony of the day. Every office should have one!

Ryan, Thanks for letting us know your experience with the treadmill. I think you are the first to come to our blog that has actualy used one on the job. good to know it meets your approval.

Wow! What a novel concept. Personally, I have a hard time balancing work and working out. I sit at my desk all day, and am usually too tired to work out by the time I get home. It is still amazing to me that I can be so mentally exhausted, that it effects me physically. I would definitely use something like this, if my office allowed it. Maybe I will convince them to let me work at home… :) Thanks for the information. I look forward to learing more!

    Hi Amber,
You are not kidding when you mention mental exhaustion effecting you physically. I think we all have that feeling from time to time. Good luck with talking your office into a purchase of one or working out of home!

A lot of people *are* doing this. Even at 4-6K, 250 walkstations have been sold as of a couple of weeks ago. But you can build your own for a lot less. Since I got my treadmill for free from a guy at church, I have a total of $25 in my setup. If I’m in the office, I’m on the treadmill walking and working.

    Hi Brad,
Thanks for checking out our blog. I just checked out your community and that is great to have 29 members. I am on my way to join and spend some more time reading what everyone has to say about officewalking. . Where did you first learn about the walkstations? I like the price of $25.00 and if it works for you and does what you need it to do- good going.
Thanks and check back with us soon!

I have been seeing a lot of this walk station lately.
There seems to be mixed opinions. Some say that people will not concentrate on thier work if they are walking at the same time (walking and chewing gum). I personally would like my boss to purchase one because our entire office could be a little more fitness oriented.

Hi Jack. Yes, here in San Diego there was a short feature piece on the officewalker.
They actually took cameras to a local business and interviewed workers that have been using the treadmill.desk combo. Most of the people couldn’t wait for their turn and one employee wishes she could buy one herself to use instead of her desk. The one they had today was strictly a standing only treadmill/desk. Thanks for taking the time to let us know what you think.

    Hello everybody,
I am going to join office walkers. I saw your weblink and thought I would come in and see what is happening. I like the restman..not too sure what i think about the handless mouse thing but could be useful in some circumstances. Shouldn’ we call that hands free mousing instead of handless mouse? Looking forward to more new items.

Jerry, thank you for coming to our blog. It is our intention to find some great new ergonomic products to eventually put on our website and make them available. There are so many inventors out there with great products. Yes, the Restman is s really good product and you just can’t beat it for the price. And, I think you are right; maybe hands free mouse would be a better term.

Sooo, I am liking the looks of this office walker. If you make one at home are you able to adjust the speed? I think these treadmills like Proform go to fast and there should be some sort of govenor on it.. So, anyone out there that has made their own walkstation. Ever have any moments where you feel you are unsafe?

    October 18, 2008 at 8:10 am

    Hi Reed,
I am not sure about the govenor issue and how easy they are to install but that sure is something we should be looking into. It could be a problem if someone inadvertantly turned the speed up while concentrating on something else.
I am sending the same message out to see if we can get some people to comment on the safety factor.
Thanks Reed and see you back here soon.

You mention a bean bag table on your website. Is it one that rests on your lap and could you get a steady enough surface to hold a laptop? Would like more info on it please.

    Hi Barney,
Thanks for the question on the laptop and sorry that I didn’t see it until today.
Yes, this table can sit in your lap and it is most definitely stead enough to hold a laptop.
We actually have several choices for lap tables. There is one straight forward beanbag table and then there is one with a ight and another with a compartment that could be used to hold pens, paper, glasses, etc. This should take you right to the front page where we are featuring the laptops for the holidays. Great gifts without really taking it to your pocketbook. Thanks Barney and see you soon. Let me know if you have any questions and I will be happy to help you.
