AGING WORKFORCE & ERGONOMICS
A growing number of our workforce is past middle age. The number of older people who work part-time is also increasing.
An ergonomically designed work place benefits all ages not just the over 45 group.
There are some things older workers may need to do to work safely and comfortably and this new category is going to get us thinking about ways to keep the older workers healthy and fit. Personally speaking, for me, it is lighting. I can sit forever in a comfortable chair at the computer but the light has to be right for me to stay on the computer for any considerable length of time. Here is one thing to keep in mind. If the monitor is displayed with maximum brightness, you will have to strain your eyes more to view the objects on the screen. That contributes to eye fatigue. Indirect lighting or shaded lighting seems to be what most experts recommend.

I am interested in the lighting of my home office. I have trouble seeing on the computer when it is daytime. I know you said that indirect lighting is best. What can you tell me about flourecsent bulbs? I always seem to get a headache when under that type of lighting. Also, what is the price going to be on the walk station machine and when do you think they will be available?
Thanks Barney
I find it great that you are considering the older generation as well as younger folks great markets for an ergonomically designed workplace. I agree that an ergonomically designed workplace, whether it be in an office or in your own home, is important to all different ages of people. I’m interested to read some of your other posts on ergonomic office designs. Thanks for the lighting insight.
Hi Barney,
This is what I know; fluorescent bulbs are filled with gas and each gas gives off a particular color of light. Flourescent bulbs are known for giving off a green tint. That is not always the most ergonomic light to use. I am sorry about the headache and am not really qualified to give you direction but suggest a task light and as much natural diffused light as possible. There has been so much interest in the work/walk station. Please check back with the blog and we will keep you up to date with pricing when we are sure that we have found the best all round product. Thanks for checking out our blog.

I can’t blame you for that Barney.
I am sure with a little research you will find the proper lighting for you.
